How do I grow my Instagram following?

How do I grow my Instagram following?

I am asked this question daily.  Several times a day.  Everyone that uses Instagram for their business, wants to grow their following and wants to sell more.

Unfortunately there isn't a simple answer to this question.  There is actually so much to it, and it comes in two parts:

  1. Setting your account up well so that you attract the right people and then when they arrive at your page they are inspired to stick around.
  2. Engaging with your audience and creating a community.

Setting your account up for success

I talk about this a lot but what I have come to discover is that many small businesses don't start here.  They jump straight into sharing their creations and products without any strategy or plan.  And yes I wholly believe in starting before you are ready and sharing whilst you're still getting set up.  Getting started is the best thing you can do for your business, but it should be backed with a simple strategy.

Your strategy will grow and evolve as your business does, but I highly recommend starting with a strategy.  And by strategy, I mean defining who you are, who your brand is, who you are talking to, what you stand for and what you want to share.  You can create all of this in a day or two, it's not going to take weeks to get started.

What doing this work up front means is that your brand messages will be clear to your dream customer?  And why is this important?

Because you want to attract the right people to your account.  You want to attract people that your product or service is for, that you can help, and that are going to resonate with your vibe.  Not everyone is your customer, and that is okay.

You want to focus on:

  • Your brand personality
  • Who is your dream customer
  • How can you help your dream customer?  What problem does your product or service help or how do you add to someone's life?
  • Creating content that connects with your customer
  • Be original and unapologetically you
  • Show up on stories
  • Create community and share other businesses

Now I know this seems a lot but once you have done this work, it honestly makes everything easier going forward.  When you have a strategy you will know exactly what to post, you will connect with your dream customer and you will build connections and relationships that will go on to turning followers into customers.

If you need some support with setting yourself up successfully to make the Instagram journey easier, please get in touch.  It’s what I doMy clients all come to me feeling overwhelmed, confused or like Instagram is just too much.  Within less than a few hours we have a strategy and a plan and they leave feeling in control, calm and confident about where they are heading.  They set up their account and then move into engaging, building and growing their account.

And that brings me to part two:

Engaging with your audience and creating a community.

Instagram is a SOCIAL platform and success comes from being social, creating connections and building relationships.

Think of the platform like you are attending a party.  You don’t just walk around sharing your message and not listening to what others have to say.  You have two way conversations and you find where you have similar values or interests and connect from there.  That is how to approach your Instagram.

Know that engaging is where the growth is.  It’s not post and run, its about creating a community and brand fans that want to keep coming back to your page to see what you have to share.  Whether that is sharing through education and value, inspiration or entertainment.

I am passionate about supporting small business owners just like you in making Instagram work uniquely for your business.  Instagram is a powerful platform and it is the best free marketing for mums at home creating and growing dream businesses.  I would love to support you and what you thrive and reach success, whatever that looks like for you.
