Let’s start with who you are? Tell us a bit about yourself.
I have x2 kids (one of each); my son just turned 15 and my daughter is 11. I have been with my husband for 18 years. We've been married for 10 and we live in beautiful Tawharanui with all our animals.
We have a lot of animals! x3 cats, Flemish Giant Rabbits, Chinchillas and my Chihuahua; plus x3 outdoor working dogs. It’s crazy but I love it.
I am 1 of 4 girls (I’m the eldest) originally from Nelson but moved North when I was 6 and never left! I’m very close with my family, my sisters are some of my best friends.
And what is CaseyVRCreative? Tell us more.
For as long as I can remember I have loved to draw and always dreamed it would be my job one day. Just over a year ago I started CaseyVRCreative illustrating custom portraits and fashion prints.
What did you do before creating your business? Tell us your journey from there to here.
I’ve always wanted to do what I’m doing now! When I was my daughters age I charged my friends money and taught them to draw. I wasn’t sure how a career in art would look because I was always told you couldn’t make money with it. I always dabbled, and sold a few paintings between having kids. One day I shared some of my illustrations on my personal Instagram and got so much good feedback and encouragement that I decided to open an illustration page and go from there.
Knowing what you know now. What would be one piece of advice would you give your 21-year-old self?
Don’t wait! If you work hard and put yourself out there you will be surprised at what you can accomplish. Work on your confidence; self development is always a good idea
What are some of the highs and lows of running your business?
The highs are amazing! I have worked with businesses I never even dared to dream of! Like Saben and Madly Sweetly.
Every time I book a portrait I smile from ear to ear and am eternally grateful that people choose me to create art for there homes and loved ones.
The lows are more ‘business related’; no steady income or sick days. And throw in some imposter syndrome!
What the biggest lesson you have learnt in your small business?
Mindset is EVERYTHING
What is one piece of advice you would share with someone just starting out?
I'd give them so much support and encouragement. Working for yourself isn’t for everyone so those that do deserve all the love and cheerleading you can give. My main advice would be to build a support system of likeminded people; people who get it! People you can bounce ideas of and pick you up when you stumble.
What do you love most about your business?
I love seeing the finished illustration, I love seeing them printed and in there new homes.
